The world students are growing up in moves quickly. Every day they are asked to process new information, make decisions, communicate with others, and adapt to situations they have never experienced before. While the classroom provides the foundation, some lessons can only be learned by stepping outside of what is familiar.

That is the power of experience.

At Yuma Co., we believe students grow most when they are given the opportunity to explore, make decisions, and discover what they are capable of. Traveling through the Dominican Republic places students in new environments where they must listen, adapt, and engage with the world around them.

For some students, that might mean navigating a conversation with someone from a different background. For others, it might mean earning their first scuba certification, exploring a new ecosystem, working through a challenge as a team, or simply realizing they are more capable than they thought.

These experiences build confidence because students are not just told that they can do difficult things—they experience it firsthand.

Research in experiential education has consistently shown that learning through direct experiences, followed by reflection, helps students develop stronger problem-solving skills, independence, and the ability to apply what they learn in new situations. Our goal is not to create a trip where everything feels easy. Growth rarely happens in complete comfort. Instead, we create an environment where students can safely step outside their comfort zones while being supported by experienced guides, local partners, and a carefully designed itinerary.
