Community Impact
Yuma Co believes travel can create meaningful connections beyond the places we visit. Through our community programs, we create opportunities for local people to connect with travelers, learn new skills, and receive practical support. Our goal is simple: use the relationships and resources created through tourism to make a positive difference in the communities around us.
Why the work matters
The Dominican Republic is home to a large community of expats, foreigners, and long-term visitors who want to contribute to the places they now call home. Yuma Co creates opportunities for those people to turn that desire to help into meaningful, hands-on experiences.
Whether it is spending an afternoon practicing English with local students or helping provide school supplies to children who need them, these programs make it easier for people to contribute their time, resources, and skills directly.
We believe giving back should be accessible, personal, and connected to the community. Our goal is to build programs that bring people together, meet real needs, and create lasting relationships between the international and local communities in the Dominican Republic.
Yuma Co. English Club
For many Dominicans learning English, the biggest challenge isn't learning vocabulary or grammar—it's finding someone to actually practice speaking with. The Yuma Co English Club was created to help bridge that gap.
Once a month, we bring English-speaking visitors and volunteers into local communities to spend time with children and young people who are learning English. Rather than sitting through another traditional lesson, students get the opportunity to have real conversations with native English speakers, ask questions, make mistakes, and build confidence using the language they've been studying.
Our sessions are designed to be relaxed, welcoming, and conversational. We provide the materials and structure, while our visiting volunteers provide something that can be difficult for students to find: genuine opportunities to use English with someone from another country.
We believe language learning becomes much more meaningful when it connects people. A conversation about where someone comes from, what they like to do, or what they hope to see in the future can be just as valuable as a vocabulary exercise.
The English Club is one small way Yuma Co can connect travelers and local communities while helping students develop a skill that can open doors for years to come.
Community giving
Sometimes making a difference is as simple as making sure a child has what they need to go to school.
Throughout the year, Yuma Co organizes occasional community giving events to provide practical support to local children and families. For each event, we identify a group of children who could benefit from additional assistance and sponsor essential items such as school supplies, backpacks, shoes, clothing, and other necessities.
These events are intentionally focused on practical needs. Rather than making a one-time donation and moving on, we want to create opportunities for our travelers, partners, and supporters to participate directly in helping the communities around us.
Depending on the project, Yuma Co may work with local contacts, schools, families, or community members to identify what is needed and make sure the resources reach the people they are intended to help.
Our giving projects may look different throughout the year because communities don't always need the same things. Sometimes that means helping students prepare for a new school year. Other times, it means responding to a specific need we've encountered through our work in the community.
We don't believe meaningful impact has to be complicated. When people have the ability to help, even relatively small contributions can make a tangible difference in someone's life.
